This is a non-explicit explainer from Vice Files. We summarise what the ratings boards have published, with no explicit imagery or description.
The confirmed ratings
- ESRB: M (Mature 17+) Confirmed. The North American board rates GTA 6 for ages 17 and up, citing intense mature themes including strong sexual content, nudity, drug references and violence among its content descriptors.
- Australia: MA15+ Confirmed by the Australian Classification Board, whose report cites strong sex scenes and drug use among the reasons for the rating.
Both are official board decisions, so we tag them confirmed. They are statements about how the game has been classified, not leaks or fan guesses.
What "M" actually means
An ESRB M (Mature 17+) rating signals content suitable for ages 17 and over. Crucially, it is not the same as AO (Adults Only 18+), the band reserved for explicit, pornographic-level sexual content or extreme graphic violence.
The difference is decisive in the real world. Sony and Microsoft do not license AO-rated games for PlayStation 5 or Xbox, and major retailers refuse to stock them. A console title built to sell tens of millions of copies is engineered to land at M and stay there. So while M permits strong sexual content and a nudity descriptor, it stops well short of the explicit acts an AO rating would require. That ceiling is the single most important fact for anyone searching whether GTA 6 is "porn" or "18+ explicit": it is mature, not pornographic.
What each descriptor means in practice
ESRB content descriptors tell you which mature elements a game contains, not how graphic they are:
- Strong Sexual Content / Sexual Themes mature sexual situations and references are present, consistent with an adults-themed crime story. Not explicit, AO-level depiction.
- Nudity some nudity exists in the world, common across M-rated open-world games. The descriptor does not mean pornographic nudity.
- Use of Drugs / Alcohol drug and alcohol themes feature in the story and world.
- Intense Violence and Strong Language the long-standing core of the series' mature rating.

PEGI and other regional boards
In Europe, PEGI is widely expected to issue a PEGI 18 rating, in line with every previous mainline Grand Theft Auto. That expectation is reasonable, but until PEGI publishes its decision it is Historical precedent, not a confirmed GTA 6 rating, and we label it that way. The same caution applies to other national boards (Germany's USK, the UK alignment with PEGI, and so on): expect mature, adults-only classifications based on the series' history, but treat any specific number as provisional until the board rules.
Can the rating be worked around?
The rating classifies the whole game, not individual scenes, and there is no confirmed way to "lower" it in-game.
