Is GTA 6 more adult than GTA 5, or has Rockstar toned it down? It is a natural question, and a tricky one, because we are comparing a fully released, fully documented game against one that does not launch until 19 November 2026. The fair way to do it is to treat GTA 5's content as a confirmed baseline and GTA 6's as a mix of confirmed ratings and unverified leaks. GTA 5: the confirmed baseline
GTA 5 is a known quantity. Its ESRB rating is M (Mature 17+), with documented content descriptors covering intense violence, blood and gore, nudity, strong sexual content, mature humor, strong language and use of drugs and alcohol. In practice, GTA 5 was notorious for:
- A strip club (the Vanilla Unicorn) with interactive elements.
- Crude, satirical humour aimed at modern American culture.
- A first-person mode added later that put its mature content front and centre.
- Some nudity and strong sexual references woven through the world.
That is the bar GTA 6 is being measured against.
GTA 6: what is confirmed so far
For GTA 6, the confirmed picture is narrower but solid:
- ESRB M (17+) Confirmed, citing strong sexual content, nudity, drugs and violence among its descriptors.
- Australia MA15+ Confirmed, with the Classification Board citing strong sex scenes and drug use.

On descriptors alone, GTA 6's adult themes look at least as mature as GTA 5's. Same M rating, same broad categories of content.
The "toned down" claim
Here is where most comparison articles overreach. A popular leak claims Rockstar is deliberately steering GTA 6 away from full nudity to stay comfortably inside ratings-board limits, implying GTA 6 will be less explicit than GTA 5 in that specific respect. It is a plausible-sounding idea that fits Rockstar's post-Hot-Coffee caution, but it is Leak / rumour and unverified. We do not present it as a Rockstar decision, and neither should anyone else.
